We’re excited to announce Praxis Credits (PRAX), a measure of contribution to the development of Praxis. In this post, we’ll discuss why we are introducing PRAX and how to contribute.

PRAX is a measure of a stakeholder’s contribution to the development of Praxis: the movement, the city, and the network.

Our mission is to accelerate technological progress to create a vital future for humanity; to this end, we are developing new cities.

Cities are large, contiguous human settlements; they require space and rules, which enable the development of their culture and economy. Cities drive technological progress when their rules enable experiments, permit free exchange, and encourage a culture of risk-taking.

To start a city, you have to get space and the right to make rules. Governments largely control both. Governments benefit from new city developments when they drive economic growth. To concretize future benefit, economic and cultural capital from residents and companies needs to be measurable, and financial capital must be formed on this basis.

Once established, a city’s rate of population growth is bottlenecked by the speed of capital coordination (human, cultural, financial), and the speed of physical construction. As we have developed technologies to improve coordination and accelerate construction, cities have developed faster and grown larger.

While ancient cities took centuries to grow and stabilize at hundreds of thousands of residents, cities post- industrial revolution scaled to millions in decades. The industrial age offered new communication and financial technologies (e.g. telegraphs and telephones; the growth of joint-stock companies and stock exchanges), as well as mass manufacturing, which unlocked coordination and construction efficiencies that enabled cities to 100x their growth rate.

Today, we have new technologies for human and financial capital coordination: the internet and crypto. The internet has enabled people across the globe to connect around common interests and rapidly scale social movements; crypto unlocks new ways to pool resources to fund them.

We have the tools to coordinate groups 10x the scale of industrial cities 10x faster towards common ends, and to coalesce the capital to fund new cities’ development. These insights and others birthed Balaji Srinivasan’s concept of The Network State. We’re bringing this vision into reality.

Since raising two years ago from Paradigm, Balaji Srinivasan, Bedrock, Apollo Projects (Max & Sam Altman), Pacman, Robot Ventures, Joe Lonsdale, Winklevoss Capital, Shervin Pishevar, Pronomos Capital, and more, we have been on the ground collaborating with governments.

We built a team including former heads of state, veteran city builders (developed 3 US cities >100k residents), and learned precisely what is needed to get rule changes that unlock technological progress in areas including energy (nuclear), AI, crypto, manufacturing, and more. Then, we negotiated initial terms with governments.

But to finalize meaningful rule changes, we need to (1) demonstrate the economic and cultural capital of our community, and (2) coalesce financial capital on that basis.

The Praxis community is zealous about contributing to the development of the city. It contains the most talented people in the world – founders, engineers, researchers, artists – based in 69 countries and 268 cities. Thousands have committed deposits towards moving. But we are somewhat disorganized, and far from realizing the potential energy of our Residents. Together, we can build worlds.

We need a simple mechanism that reveals the latent economic and cultural capital of our community, amplifies existing zeal, and maximizes its impact on the development of Praxis.

PRAX solves this. PRAX is a measure of a stakeholder's contribution to the development of Praxis, calculated on the basis of the quality of attempt and completion of specified actions targeted at furthering the project. The revealed economic and cultural capital will convey to capital markets the scale and quality of demand for Praxis, unlocking the scalable financial commitments

 needed to unlock rule changes from Host Governments.

Simply: proven demand unlocks capital; capital unlocks rule changes that accelerate tech progress. This is how we build the city of the future.

You earn PRAX by doing Commits. Commits are specified actions that contribute to the development of Praxis: the movement, the city, and (eventually) the network. Commits demonstrate and grow the economic and cultural capital of Praxis.
You also earn PRAX by referring citizens and companies that apply to the Steel Visa and BOP. If successful, you earn PRAX.

Initially, only stakeholders (Residents, BOPs, and applicants to both) are eligible. You can apply to become eligible.

 As we’ve seen with Blast’s pre-launch TVL mechanic, new technology uniquely enables scaling deposits to demonstrate capital commitment. Blast could start a city if their TVL was Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

 Blockchains are like cities. Cities are also like blockchains. Cities have a lot to learn from blockchains, which have extremely effective demand coordination mechanisms, BD, marketing, community, branding teams. NYC is like the EF: most important, but it can't change frequently because “breaking updates” disincentivize long term planning and disrupt existing structures. Singapore is like Solana: up and coming, fast, commercial, crushing. Cities should be more like Singapore or Dubai in the beginning.

 The barrier between these categories is permeable, and raises questions analogous to those considered in the debates over fat vs. thin protocols, i.e. how much physical infra (e.g. energy) and social (e.g. education / healthcare) do cities take on vs letting the market provide solutions. We should probably build the roads. The schools are a maybe. Certainly not the supermarkets.

Introducing Praxis Credits (PRAX)

At Praxis, we want a radically better future. We believe that technology, in coordination with institutions, can deliver it. Today, we’re excited to share with you a new type of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) that harmonizes the goals of technology with government: Acceleration Zones.

 (AZs) are a new type of Special Economic Zone that accelerate technological progress in service of national priorities. Acceleration Zones do this by attracting technologists and developing an institutional structure that guides technological development and the reinvestment of proceeds. The key features of Acceleration Zones are:

Permissionless innovation as an operating principle; new technologies will not be preemptively regulated.

Specific regulatory changes and incentives tailored to attract companies in regulated industries, and guide technological progress.

: AZB is authorized to make regulatory changes on an ongoing basis to meet the changing needs of companies and upon identifying new opportunities for the nation. The board sets measurable, quantifiable goals.

: a company or foundation dedicated to the aggregation of residential and commercial demand, and the ongoing development and operation of the AZ. This is supplementary 

Optional: Acceleration Zone Fund, to invest in businesses that establish operations within the Zone, with strategic local, corporate, and bilateral LPs.

Acceleration Zones are designed to be attractive to Government, Companies, Capital, and Residents.

 (especially elected officials): AZs are simple to implement (generally passing one law is sufficient), and offer an immediate winning popular narrative:

$10-100B Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) package from the companies that set up operations.

Concrete solutions to pressing issues in the country (e.g. public transportation, energy, unemployment), direct or indirect.

Direct: Create jobs, reverse brain drain.

Indirect: Proceeds invested in infrastructure and social goods.

Big name companies, founders, and cultural figures moving elicits a sense of national pride.

Visually attractive: Successful AZs will become beautiful, green, culturally dynamic cities, monuments to their nation’s culture and future.

Competitive strategic positioning, e.g. internal production of energy, semiconductors, etc.

 AZs unlock technological progress and economic opportunity via regulatory change, economic incentives, and new infrastructure. Further, successful AZs will have top talent and offer Silicon Valley business norms in new markets.

 AZs will make money on golden visas for residents, land value appreciation / monetization (the companies are clustered on a single site), and corporate and income tax revenue. Investors will include the governments, corporate strategics, bilateral strategics, partner developers, and residents.

Residents will move to Acceleration Zones because they offer an opportunity to build the future. Some residents will be returning to their homeland with a feeling of patriotic duty; others exploring a new frontier. AZs are an opportunity to found a new company, found a new culture, and found a new city with the most talented, ambitious, optimistic people in the world.

Opportunities unlocked by Acceleration Zones generally take the shape of new technologies with significant regulatory burden. Examples include:

The aggregate impact of Acceleration Zones is the acceleration of AI, energy, biotech, and everything else. 

AZs will quickly deliver the benefits of Silicon Valley to the world, in a real, practical, visible way to impact the everyday lives of people.

 Further, they do so in an institutionally aligned way to avoid friction and blockers. Long term, Acceleration Zones may be our path to the stars.

We are pleased to announce that former Chief Executive Officer of the Howard Hughes Corporation, David Weinreb, will join Praxis as Vice Chairman. David is spearheading our search for a founding site on the Mediterranean.

Howard Hughes is a pioneer developer of planned cities, such as The Woodlands, Texas; Columbia, Maryland; and Summerlin, Nevada — each with over 100,000 residents.

Other projects David oversaw include the transformation of Lower Manhattan’s South Street Seaport from a tattered tourist district into a prime destination for New York residents. This project included the Rooftop at Pier 17, which was named the Best New Concert Venue in 2019 by Pollstar. Under his leadership of the Howard Hughes Corporation (NYSE: HHC), the company’s share price rose by over 300%.

Praxis is a movement of optimistic pioneers building a new city. We recently completed a capital raise led by Bedrock. Geoff Lewis has joined our Board of Directors. I’d like to share a bit about why we are building Praxis. We are a group of builders who want to build. Unfortunately, because of poor regulations and an increasingly divisive geopolitical climate, it’s becoming harder and harder to do this on Earth. Elon Musk is trying to exit to Mars. Mark Zuckerberg is trying to exit into the Metaverse. While we believe in and support their exploration, we still think there is hope here on Earth.

Until very recently, people moved to cities for jobs. With the advent of new technologies and changes to traditional working models, habits started shifting. New work models appeared on the horizon, allowing pioneers to work flexibly from wherever. In 2020, Covid catalyzed and accelerated the trend of remote work in an unimaginable way. Now many people can work from their laptops from anywhere. Is this the end of cities? No. People still want to organize around shared values and community, as they have for thousands of years. But they can do so wherever they feel home — and home is where they find their community.

Simultaneously, the rise of crypto creates an unprecedented opportunity to use tokens as a social coordination mechanism. Using tokens, we can coordinate as a community to build new cities which represent trillions of dollars of real assets. NYC land is worth >$2T. More on this soon.
